Atlantean Pt.1 - Concept Art, 3D Art, and Portraits

Being the only artist in the studio meant that I had to move rapidly and jump between concept art, character art, illustration, marketing images, and VFX/SFX support. The animation was the only art asset I was able to outsource (except for the T2) and I was managing feedback for them as well. This meant that I had to get away with making rough sketches for concept art, just enough to formulate the design before jumping into the sculpting. This method allowed me to iterate and pivot quickly along the way. The only downside of this method is that I don't get to have pretty concept art like everyone else! :P

For the Tier 1 units I wanted to have a theme of "adapt", where the unit can shift into a melee/ranged units every turn. Base unit, Pollywog, was designed to resemble a tadpole while the upgrades looks like an angler fish and a jellyfish.

Pollywog model/texture. I made decent amount of changes to the face shape to make it more rabbit-like than a jumping spider which was the initial intent.

Writing a little blurb of the characteristics of the units really helped me create interesting concept art, and allowed the modelers and animators to make the characters feel cohesive.
